This is one of the first books published in English covering the story of von Lettow-Vorbeck and how he trained his troops in the brilliant devastating technique that were to later be called guerilla warfare, long marches on short rations, quick strikes then disappearing into the Bush to attack again when least expected. It describes in vivid detail the bloodbath of the events,' caused sometimes by British bungling, but more often by von Lettow’s ruthlessness. At one period during the campaign of 1917 von Lettow estimated that the British add 130 generals and 300,000 troops assigned to take German East Africa from his vastly outnumbered army.
